This volume contains the proceedings of a one-day meeting organized by Glaxo Laboratories in March 1971. It dealt with the mechanisms and kinetics of the transport of nutrients across the mucosal membrane of the intestine.
The symposium was divided into several parts. The first was concerned with the transport of water and electrolytes, the second with sugars, the third with amino acids and proteins, and the fourth with transport of fat. Each of the four sessions was preceded by an informative review of the current status of the subject and was followed by several original contributions—a total of 18.
The meeting grouped together some 50 contributors and participants (by invitation), most of them coming from the United Kingdom. The name of the "International Symposium" given to it by Booth in his "Foreword" was justified by the presence of four participants from Ireland, two from Scandinavia, two from Switzerland, and two
