This monograph offers an extensive review of the literature on meningeal leukemia. This disorder had a manyfold increased incidence, and the treatment has become increasingly important, since there are now programs for acute leukemia that may eradicate the disease outside the central nervous system. The book is outlined well and is divided into ten major chapters. After the introduction, the second chapter deals with the characteristics of meningeal leukemia (pathology, incidence, recurrence, development, and signs and symptoms).
The third chapter is about systemic therapy for meningeal leukemia; it includes a discussion of the nitrosoureas and the blood-brain barrier. Intrathecal therapy with folic acid antagonists and other drugs is presented in the subsequent chapter. The next two sections are on radiotherapy and on the combination of radiotherapy and chemotherapy. Central nervous system involvement by Burkitt lymphoma is discussed next, followed by an overview of therapy of acute leukemia.
