This is a handbook of medicine, printed in England and compiled by a group of outstanding international medical scientists from various countries with strong United Kingdom affiliations (associated formerly with the British Commonwealth of nations). The senior editors are from the Nairobi Medical School in Kenya and the University of Reading. Contributors include faculty members from Australia, Uganda, and several of the London hospitals—Guy's, Thomas's Charing Cross Hospital group, London Hospital, Moorfield's Eye Hospital and Hospital for Tropical Diseases.
The book starts out with three excellent contributions listed as "Recent Advances," ie, a discussion of cancer immunity, the prostaglandins, and treatment of infertility. The center of the book is entitled a "Concise Guide to Modern Treatment," which includes common emergencies. This is followed by a chapter on laboratory tests and treatment of alcoholism and drug dependency. The concluding chapters discuss contraception, tropical diseases in nontropical countries, adolescent care, and electrocardiography.
