This well-established annual review takes on the considerable task of covering "Basic Neurological Sciences," "Neurology," "Neurosurgery," and "Psychiatry!" To be reasonably comprehensive in reviewing these fields is most difficult (if not impossible—Ed.), if an informative and readable text of marketable length is the goal. Individual chapters vary in style and degree of success in coping with this problem.
The chapters in the "Basic Science" section pursue comprehensive coverage and referencing and generally are quite good, with some variation in terms of readability. The chapter on "Pharmacology" is especially fine.
The chapters on "Neurology" are generally broad and informative. The chapter on "Neuro-ophthalmology" departs from the general format and presents a superb short paper on "How Visual Stimuli Move the Eyes." No attempt is made to review the rest of neuro-ophthalmology, and the reader is referred to sources of general survey coverage.
