This volume contains a generally well-chosen collection of review articles on a wide range of biochemical processes occurring in human platelets. Each chapter is written by a group of well-known investigators and the editors have allowed considerable latitude in style, length, experimental detail, and speculations.

In most chapters, much of the work summarizes the contributions of the authors in a specific field of platelet research over the last five to ten years. Two lengthy opening chapters by Holmsen and Day regarding the induction of the platelet release reaction and its integral relationship with intraplatelet adenine nucleotide transport are the most important ones. Other interesting topics include lipid metabolism, energy metabolism of aggregating platelets, platelet biochemical heterogeneity, membrane glycoproteins, other platelet proteins, and elastolytic protease of platelets.

Another fine chapter is the one on platelet contractile proteins by Booyse and Rafelson. This volume is highly technical, and while it is a
