The monograph was originally published as Journal of Trauma, vol 10, 1970. It represents the proceedings of the International Trauma Symposium held May 18-20, 1970, in Washington, DC, under the auspices of the National Institute of General Medical Sciences. Participants included members of Congress, insurance officials, representatives of the National Institutes of Health, the National Research Council, and professors and specialists in the field of trauma from all over the United States, Canada, England, and Sweden.
The approach to the symposium was that trauma is the responsibility not only of the surgeon and physiologist but also of internists, pathologists, behavioral scientists, biochemical engineers, economists, hospital administrators, pharmacologists, computer scientists, and many others. The program was devised around this idea and a multitude of avenues to the prevention of trauma and care of the patient were presented.
