This volume is the third in a series publishing selected important research work presented at the European Conference on Microcirculation. This group is extremely active and capable in this field which cuts across many fields including anatomy, physiology, clinical medicine, pharmacology, biophysics, rheology, immunology, transplantation, coagulation, and other fields. It is a book of broad interest. Certainly knowledge of contemporary events in microcirculation progress is essential for the understanding of disease. The present volume has an extremely comprehensive chapter on the influence of intravenous fat emulsions on the microcirculation; another on the evaluation of infrared thermography; methods of examining the microcirculation in nerves, cochlea, and nucleus pulposus; and last on the influence of smoking on the microcirculation.
With the development of sophisticated methods of observing the microcirculation in various disease states, it is possible for the first time to understand some of the events which transpire in tissue. Certainly this
