This diagnostic handbook is a small pearl of medical wisdom. The present eighth edition has a foreword by the eminent Rt. Hon. Lord Cohen of Birkenhead, president of the General Medical Council. This British textbook is a manual of differential diagnosis based on 24 chapters, each of which is a common presenting complaint given by a patient when he comes to a physician. The general discussions are all based on physiologic principles.

The individual discourses start with a physiologic discussion and proceed to a listing and description of the individual disease syndromes. Seven of the chapters are on some form of pain, for example, head pain, umbilical pain, and lateral abdominal pain. The book is up to date with references to modern biochemical tests as well as physical findings and symptoms.
