Donald D. Matson has completely revised this comprehensive neurosurgical monograph and has almost doubled its content. Besides giving more depth and long-term evaluation for many of the results of his surgical procedures, he has added important new sections.
He has added an extensive section on epilepsy, including the surgical therapy of temporal lobe epilepsy, the Sturge-Weber syndrome, and infantile hemiplegia with epilepsy. His section on "Neuroradiologic Diagnosis" is perhaps too concise as is the section on "Radioisotopic Scanning." His short discussion on pain and its surgical alleviation in childhood is important and is probably unique.
The sections on "Congenital Anomalies," "Trauma," "Neoplasia (Cranial, Cerebral, Spinal, and Peripheral)," "Infection," "Cerebrovascular Disorders," and "Pediatric Neurosurgical Anesthesia," and "Postoperative Care," are again outstanding and current.
It is also of note that Matson writes more optimistically regarding the treatment of hydrocephalus and meningomyelocele, but is still more conservative than many.
