A conference on jaundice was held in Freiburg in October 1967 in honor of the retirement of Professor Ludwig Heilmeyer. One hundred scientists participated: 60 Germans and 40 from 15 other countries, including 8 from the United States. Slightly more than half of the reports are in German; the others are in English. There are four main subject headings: bilirubin metabolism, ultrastructure of the liver in jaundice, clinical aspects of jaundice, and diagnostic procedures. Only one of the 41 papers pertains to medical and one to surgical therapy.
Contributions range from little more than abstracts to detailed reports. Most of them, as well as the remarks of some of the discussants, are followed by short bibliographies. The numerous illustrations are of excellent quality. This volume is not a complete textbook about jaundice, but it provides much useful, thought-provoking information about many of its aspects.
