The Second National Conference on Prosthetic Heart Valves was held on May 30 and 31 and June 1, 1968, in Los Angeles. Participating in this meeting were many of the physicians who have contributed to the remarkable development of prosthetic valves. The communications presented have been compiled under the editorship of Lyman A. Brewer, III; they document the tremendous advances made since the first conference on prosthetic valves for cardiac surgery held eight years earlier. They also highlight the very real problems that await solution.
The book is divided into five sections: (1) "Valve Structure and Testing"; (2) "Materials and Myocardial Function"; (3) "Clinical Experience"; (4) "Results and Complications"; and (5) "Valve Grafts." The chairman of each section often makes pithy comments after the presentations.
