Since the construction of the ophthalmoscope, physicians have been intrigued and influenced by study of the retinochoroidal vascular structures. Now, a clinical technique has been developed for ophthalmoscopic study of the hemodynamics of these vascular systems. This involves the intravenous administration of fluorescein with simultaneous observation of the retina with the use of a blue light to illuminate the circulating fluorescein.
Ophthalmologists have been using this technique for approximately a decade. Recently, however, because of the availability of retinal cameras capable of rapid sequence photography, there has been a meteoric rise of interest in this procedure.
Shikano and Shimizu have collated an initial atlas of retinochoroidal fluorescein photographs which are dramatic and striking. The quality of the photographs is superb, with detail being carried to the capillary level.
