The avowed purpose of the third edition is an outline of structure and function of the normal and diseased kidney, especially written for students. In this edition de Wardener has deleted three chapters and rewritten or revised those on "Renal Function," "Selected Disturbances of Tubular Function," "Renal Infections," and "The Relationship Between Uric Acid and the Kidney."
The general organization of the text is unchanged. It is organized into three main sections. The first deals with normal structure and function; in general it is thorough, concise, and well organized. The chapter dealing with tests of renal structural integrity is too brief and not well illustrated, particularly the sections on radiologic procedures and renal biopsy. The discussion of the kidney and edema is also too short and probably difficult for the student to integrate with general concepts of edema formation.
