Pacemaker Therapy for Cardiac Arrhythmias

Experience with 36 consecutive patients who received pacemaker therapy during a 20-month period at the University of Washington Hospital demonstrated that this therapy was effective in chronic third degree atrioventricular block, acute third degree atrioventricular block associated with myocadial infarction, symptomatic bradycardia, ventricular tachyarrhythmias, and intermittent atrioventricular conduction defects regardless of their causes or complications. Subsequently, 23 patients required permanent pacemakers. Of the 23, 19 were alive after a 17-month follow-up. Of 13 patients who required only temporary pacemakers, 7 reverted to normal sinus rhythm and were alive after a 15-month follow-up. Six died of complications of cardiac surgery or diffuse myocardial disease. No deaths were associated with pacemaker implantation.
