Hepatic scintiphotos with the gamma camera were obtained after intravenous administration of colloidal gold Au 198. This instrument has permitted more rapid scanning of improved technical quality. It allows simultaneous visualization of liver, spleen, and bone marrow activity.
Twenty-two patients with hepatitis were studied and compared with 20 control patients. Statistically significant hepatomegaly was demonstrated in 91% of those with hepatitis. Characteristic scintiphotos were seen in all hepatitis patients. Decreased uptake was noted in all patients with enlarged livers. The hepatic borders were ill-defined in all patients and perihepatic background activity was increased in 12 of the patients with hepatomegaly. Splenic activity correlated well with splenomegaly on physical examination, and combined with bone marrow uptake indicated increased severity and chroni-city of the hepatitis.
