Professor Gelfand has collected in this small volume a complete study of intestinal bilharziasis from the standpoint of the biology of Schistosoma mansoni in man, snail hosts, and animals. Subsequent chapters deal with the pathology, clinical manifestations, prognosis, treatment, prevention, and environmental control. The author has extensive personal experience in various aspects of bilharziasis in Africa; hence he is uniquely qualified to summarize the available information and interpret conclusions in light of his own experience. The work is well written and very readable.
The major criticism which I would raise cannot be directed against the author, but rather the publisher; references fail to include the titles of the articles. For the student of schistosomiasis or the physician interested in delving into the finer nuances of clinical manifestations, this book is a must.
