The editor is an authority on experimental pathology and has contributed widely in the field of myocardial necrosis as related to stress, electrolytes, histochemical changes, enzymes, nutritional, and endocrine interactions.

This is an impressive array of papers contributed by a distinguished group of researchers from all over the world. It brings into focus an area in which the data has been sketchy, fragmentary, and incomplete. It should prove a most enlightening source of information for people in academic medicine interested in intermediary metabolism of heart muscle and its mechanical, hormonal, enzymatic, and electrolyte mechanisms. The first volume is a collection of 22 papers covering such areas as magnesium and potassium metabolism; the possible significance of electrolytes and nutritional deficiencies in the genesis of experimental myocardial necrosis and necrotizing myocardiopathies; and the relationship between vascular function, vascular reactivity, and electrolyte metabolism in the pathogenesis of hypertension.
