This book is a collection of 25 papers presented at the Symposium on Ultrasound in Biology and Medicine held in June 1962, at the University of Illinois. Scientists from Australia, England, Germany, Italy, Japan, Sweden, and the United States attended. The papers presented represent the major research effort being conducted in this field.
The reports indicate that more emphasis is being placed on investigating the mechanism of action of ultrasonic energy on biological tissues than was the case in the past. The first several papers were concerned strictly with the physical principles involved in the action of ultrasound on biological tissues and its use as a basic biological research tool, particularly weak ultrasound.
The majority of the reports deal with the application of ultrasound in diagnosis and therapy in clinical medicine. Studies are presented on the use of high intensity ultrasound for altering the cellular structure of the anterior pituitary,
