This book presents the papers delivered at the Seventh Conference on Research in Emphysema held in Aspen, Colo in June 1964. It represents a compendium of knowledge to the date of the conference and contains many papers describing recent work by the leaders in pathogenic research of chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
In the first portion the papers describe new work in pulmonary morphology of both normal and diseased states. The discussions of recent electron microscopic observations of the lung are excellent and there is an attempt to understand the correlation of structure and function.
Applied mathematical analysis of pulmonary structure and function is another topic well handled in papers by Permutt and Staub. This topic reaches its peak in a very sophisticated treatise by Gomez in which he presents a physicomathematical study of lung function in normal subjects as well as patients with chronic obstructive pulmonary diseases.
