This book records the proceedings of a symposium held at the Middlesex Hospital Medical School and the Ciba Foundation, London, in March 1963 and organized by the Co-ordinating Committee for Symposia on Drug Action of the Biological Council. The symposium was held in two parts. The first was the formal presentation of papers, with discussion, while the second part consisted of discussions by a panel of about thirty invited speakers.
The preface states that the intended scope of this symposium was to investigate the role and limitations of animal behavior studies in the investigation of drugs which affect the central nervous system. This aim was generally achieved, although in such a complex and relatively uncharted area there were bound to be both relative and absolute omissions. As might be expected in such a collection of papers, there was some variation in standards, but on the whole, the quality was high.
