Gleanings From the Commonplace Book of a Medical Reader

In the last two numbers we have been talking about Bach and Handel. Even to those whose prime interests are clinical rather than musical, I hope that the experience was a stimulating one. Nearly all of us are appreciative of mastery of execution, no matter in what field; we are sensitive to light and beauty, and welcome anything that widens knowledge and deepens intuition. Indeed I like to think that the effect is rather like the experience that one has after a fine concert. You go out into the street still held aloft on the shoulders of Mozart, Beethoven, Handel, or Bach. You are above time and place; you can believe that the good life is not yet a lost dream.
