ABSTRACT

Occasionally I hear a brilliant discourse which sends me scurrying off on the trial of more information about a particular person. It was my singular pleasure to hear such a talk on John Coakley Lettsom delivered by Dr. Edward Rose. So when I came across Abraham's biography of Lettsome: His Life, Times, Friends and Descendants in a medical book catalogue I gathered it in. Now I have read it. Who was this Lettsom? He was born in the West Indies and brought up in a family of the Society of Friends. He used the proceeds of a very wealthy practive to support charities of almost every kind. He broke ground for the employment of air and sunshine and bathing in the ocean to treat tuberculosis in the scrofulous victims of the London slums. He got the English out of fetid summer hot houses and helped to popularize holidays at ocean
