ABSTRACT

It is very curious how one gets on the trail of books. I have a feeling that sometimes books track me down. They do in a literal way where friends not only tell me about their favorite books but sometimes send them to me. Of course this is a risky thing, both for the donor and the recipient. It may be dangerous if the donor is author too. But authors are a hardy breed. Carroll Coleman, master craftsman of bookmaking, sent me a copy of Herbert Faulkner West's address to colleagues and returning alumni at Dartmouth which extolled the proper functions of the teacher and at the same time chided the sometimes inadvertent obliquities of the burgeoning administrative hierarchy.
