Occasionally stuffy people who take themselves and their work so seriously that they never relax the corrugator muscle of their eyebrows are saved from the final doom of destruction in opisthotonos by some prankster who shakes them up by presenting a totally unacceptable and therefore impossible view of this or that. A friend whom I have never met and a lover of books, old and new, has been on the prowl for things that might tickle my fancy and sent me this wonderfully cheerful tract, elegantly reprinted, purporting to be and for all I know actually being A Treatise Humbly Addressed to The Royal Society and, as they say in the front of it, "In which is proved, by most Incontestable Evidence, drawn from Reason and Practice, that a Woman may conceive and be brought to bed, without any Commerce with Man."
