ABSTRACT

Dr. Maddison dedicated his elegant collection of the portraiture of Robert Boyle to the late John Farquhar Fulton for whom Professor McKie has written a handsome word of tribute. This volume was originally printed in the September and December issue of the Annals of Science, in 1959. It was published as a separate book in March, 1962. A special order of scholarship is required to produce accurate iconography. It often represents in a way what very few other forms of literary scholarship even try to do, cumulating the fruit of the devoted and obsessive persistence of a lifetime. It cannot arise except as it is the result of painstaking search. Someone must seek out original material in all sorts of places. If the fact of such a search is widely known, many scholars not working on a particular problem directly may contribute useful lore or provide helpful suggestions and bits
