In a recent editorial in The Lancet it is stated that clinical observations on myocardial failure and cardiomyopathies emphasize the need for deeper understanding of the physiology of cardiac muscle contraction. To quote the editorial: "Our American colleagues are fully aware of the importance of integrating basic biochemical, biophysical, and physiological effort." This remark applies particularly well to the special issue of the New York Heart Association dealing with the myocardium, "its biochemistry and biophysics," published by the American and the New York Heart Associations. The volume contains articles on structure, biochemistry, and physical chemistry of the heart muscle. It has been extremely well organized by Alfred Fishman and others from the New York Heart Association among whom are Charles Kossman, Chandler Brooks, Ludwig Eichna, and John V. Taggart. The volume represents the most complete review of the biochemistry and the biophysics of the myocardium. It deals not only with
