The Yankee City Series, edited by Lloyd Warner, published by the Yale University Press, presents an intensive and extensive study of a typical contemporary New England community seen from the vantage point of social science. This, the last book in the series, completes a study which included The Social Life of a Modern Community, The Status System of a Modern Community, The Social Systems of American Ethnic Groups, The Social System of the Modern Factory, The Strike: A SocialAnalysis, and now The Living and the Dead. I have not read the other books in this series, but if they come up to the standards of this one, they must be good. This is a great encouragement to the average layman or physician who is likely to be pretty bewildered by the jargon beneath which social scientists are likely to camouflage any intellectual activity they may have.
