ABSTRACT

The festschrift, formal ceremonies of celebration, and bound volumes of papers dedicated to distinguished physicians, have grown rarer with the passage of time. The publication, some time ago, of this book of tribute to Bela Schick gives suitable occasion for noting reasons for this decline and a comment on whether such tributes serve a usefull purpose or not. Contemporary man is not given overmuch to praise of individual specimens of his fellow man, at least not until they are dead. This is a pity. For those whose sentiments allow them to indulge in hero worship, there are strong impulses for praising heroes while they are still extant. Thus the collection of a group of memorial papers dedicated to a great contemporary spirit has much to recommend it. On the other hand, the collection is likely to be a hodgepodge of material on hand or ancient stuff rehashed and warmed over
