Dr. Hansen, a pediatrician, has written a readable and well-organized monograph which deals predominantly with his experiments on cats and guinea pigs. These were designed to throw light on the turnover of lymphocytes and the influence of ACTH or cortisone thereupon. A brief excursion into the usefulness of these hormones in the treatment of lymphatic diseases of childhood is presented as what this reviewer feels is an expendable epilogue. Dr. Hansen's main experimental methods were collection of lymph from the thoracic duct, and labelling of lymphocytes with P³² or fluorescent dyes. He found that the life span of lymphocytes is not more than one day, and that corticoids effect the production rather than the destruction of lymphocytes. None of his findings are revolutionary, many of them confirm previous observations by others (which are reviewed conscientiously) and all of them are based on sound work.
