In the preface it is said that the conferences of the Josiah Macy, Jr. Foundation are efforts to provide communication between investigators by means of small meetings with emphasis on discussion. The conference on polysaccharides appears to have fulfilled this purpose. The transactions are reported in a manner which preserves the spirit of spontaneous discussion, questioning, and rebuttal. Dr. Paul György was the chairman. There were twenty-seven members and guests.
In the transactions the first discussion, led by Dr. M. L. Wolfrom, is concerned with nomenclature. Among other things, the participants raise questions regarding application of the rules of carbohydrate nomenclature to the complex polysaccharides and consider such items as the use of desoxy- versus deoxy- as a prefix. The second discussion, conducted by Dr. Karl Meyer, is on problems of classification. A sample of this section is a question on the definition of mucopolysaccharides, which leads to several pages
