A method of placing and distending a balloon in various chambers of the heart and in the great vessels was previously described.1 This method permits electrocardiographic observation of the effect of increased pressure within and distention of the cardiac cavities and of obstruction to blood flow in the great vessels of the intact young dog under light ether anesthesia.

This method of study has many undesirable features. It is difficult to state what degree of pressure is exerted on adjacent structures. With the baloon placed in the right ventricle, pressure might be exerted through the septum influencing the mitral or aortic orifices, or on the A-V node, His bundle, right bundle branch and its arborizations, or there could be interference with the flow of blood through the right ventricle by obstruction of the tricuspid orifice or of the entrance to the pulmonary artery orifice.
