In undertaking the work the editors state their reasons frankly. The sum of the knowledge required today of the student and practitioner of medicine is large, and increasing daily, and in the relatively short time devoted to the acquisition of the knowledge necessary, there is a large amount of information which can neither be covered in the classes nor remembered afterward, especially the minutiae and less essential details of the subdivisions or specialties of medicine. In undertaking to present the series, the editors have endeavored to obtain the outstanding authorities in each division.
